Preparing for your session with me!
Photo sessions can be the hardest to do, not only for you but for me as well. People ask me how to prepare for their session all the time. There are SO many things I can tell you in order to achieve the BEST looking photos. I came up with a few tips to help you out and prepare before hand so the time we are together is dedicated to getting the BEST shots!
1. Choose a location
Location is probably the most important thing during your session. Pick a place that you are familiar with. Scout out places for us after you book ( I will usually suggest some places that I have shot previously but I am open to try new places as well). Nature parks, city parks, Michigan State parks are great locations to do photo sessions, they are less crowded with people and have low or FREE admission. Also, remember that places with equal amounts of shade and sunlight provide the best opportunities for photos! Pick a place that has a variety of "set ups" too, like a bench, a "big tree" an open field, a barn and so on. I can usually be the creative one during the shoot and say " lets go over there it looks like a good spot!"
2. Bring props with you!
I am open to many things included in your photo. WHY? because these photos are representing YOU and YOUR personality. Some ideas are balloons, chalkboards, signs, old photos, books, a cool chair, holiday decor.
3. Dress to Impress.
No that does not mean you have to be in your Sunday best or go out and buy new clothes just for your session. But, if you want to, go ahead. Keep in mind you want to be comfortable as we will be sitting, standing, walking around. You still want to portray your personal style with your clothing so make sure YOU are confident in what you are wearing, you want to be the BEST version of you. Be stylish but don't go over the top. Laying looks good in photos too as well as cool textures. Stay away from boring dull colors and plain t-shirts and also clothing with big names on the front (unless your doing a styled session of a sports team.) Don't forget to ACCESSORIZE with jewelery and belts) It is also a good idea to color coordinate with 2-3 different colors.
4. Bring your life into it.
This kind of goes along with the props that you bring. You want your photo session to be YOURs. Think of cool ideas and poses that you like. Do your session at your home, or your favorite place, maybe doing your favorite past time or activity. Dress to play the roll and mix your personality and imagination.
Relax and show your personality. Again, these are your photos, make them super awesome. Let loose during the session, laugh, tell jokes, act silly. Do whatever you do with your friends and family with me. Why do I tell you this? Because I want to capture true life.
I want to see the love and the relationships, laughter and funny faces.
5. Time is essential.
It is so so so important to be on time for your session.your session will be only a specific amount of time. If you are late you are wasting time that could be used to the best photos. You don't want to have to hurry your session along because you arrived late. Also, session are planned for certain times of the day for the absolute best light. These make certain photos have a certain look. The best time is usually 1-2 hours before sunset and about an hour after sunrise. If you can't arrange your schedule for those times, finding SHADED areas is best!
I hope these tips help you when your planning your session with me!
Again, let me know if you have ANY questions I will try to help as much as I can.
Most importantly, let's have some FUN!
